'Sick' employee fired because of Facebook surfing

Facebook sacking

A Nationale Suisse worker in Basel, Switzerland, lost her job because she used Facebook at home while off sick.

The woman said she couldn't look at a computer screen and needed to rest in a darkened room instead of working, but was then seen to be active on Facebook, which insurer Nationale Suisse said in a statement had destroyed its trust in the employee.

"This abuse of trust, rather than the activity on Facebook, led to the ending of the work contract," it said.

The unnamed woman told the 20 Minuten daily she had been surfing Facebook in bed on her iPhone and accused her employer of spying on her and other employees by sending a mysterious friend request which allows access to personal online activity.

Nationale Suisse rejected the accusation of spying and said the employee's Facebook activity had been stumbled across by a colleague in November, before use of the social network site was blocked in the company.

Two friends in Central Pennsylvania have just been charged $26,000 on a phone bill in an attempt to set a text-messaging record, exchanging a thumbs-flying total of 217,000 during March.

Nick Andes, 29, and Doug Klinger, 30, were surprised by their phone bill as they were relying on their unlimited text messaging plans to get them through the escapade.

"It came in a box that cost $27.55 to send to me," Andes told The Associated Press.

The two have been practically nonstop texters for about a decade since they attended Berks Technical Institute together.

That led Andes to search for the largest monthly text message total he could find posted online: 182,000 sent in 2005 by Deepak Sharma in India.

Andes and Klinger were able to set up their phones to send multiple messages. During a February test run they found they could send 6,000 or 7,000 messages on some days, prompting the March messaging marathon.

"Most were either short phrases or one word, 'LOL' or 'Hello', things like that, with tons and tons of repeats,' said Andes, a messenger and title clerk who loads trucks for UPS in the morning.

Andes sent more than 140,000 messages, and Klinger sent more than 70,000 to end the month with a total of just over 217,000, he said.

Guinness World Records has not yet responded to the pair's record-setting attempt.

Domino's Pizza staff fired after YouTube prank

Two Domino's Pizza employees in Houston have been fired after they uploaded footage to YouTube showing one of them doing unsavoury things with sandwich ingredients.

One clip shows Michael Setzer, 32, putting food up his nose and sneezing on other items while Kristy Hammonds, 31, laughs, while another shows him wiping his bottom with a kitchen sponge, The Consumerist reports.

The two were charged with distributing prohibited foods.

On Tuesday morning Kristy apologized to the company in an e-mail message saying: "Michael never would do that to any customer, EVER!! I AM SOO SORRY!

"This prank was very very immature and I am sorry for the embarrassment that I have caused your company!"

Still, Domino’s fired the two employees, and they were in the custody of the Conover police department on Wednesday evening.

"We got blindsided by two idiots with a video camera and an awful idea," said Domino's executive Tim McIntyre, who added that the company was preparing a civil lawsuit.

"Even people who’ve been with us as loyal customers for 10, 15, 20 years, people are second-guessing their relationship with Domino’s, and that’s not fair."

Man tosses $30,000 on freeways

Posted by hitsu On 4/14/2009 06:45:00 PM 0 comments

A man was arrested for throwing bank notes worth about T$1 million ($29,600) from vehicles, causing disorder in the streets.

The man tossed the money from a taxi in a crowded part of Taichung city, Taiwan, on Sunday as people stopped to pick up the cash, Changhua police official Lin Shih-ming said.

He is believed to have thrown heaps more money on an earlier road trip starting in the capital Taipei, Reuters reports.

The man also burned about T$400,000 and had two more sacks of cash, apparently the proceeds of a property sale.

"He might have had a nervous condition, as his state of mind wasn't normal," Lin said.

Some of the passers-by who picked up the bills turned the money over to police, while others pocketed it.

The suspect would be charged with public endangerment and destruction of currency, Lin said.

Former yakuza boss quits crime to become priest

Tadamasa Goto
Tadamasa Goto

Tadamasa Goto, one of Japan's most notorious underworld bosses, is seeking a change of career as he begins training to become a priest.

As leader of a yakuza – or Japanese mafia – gang, Goto earned a fortune through protection rackets, white-collar crime, drugs and prostitution, and would bulldoze any business that resisted him.

But his life will take a decidedly austere turn when he begins training to be a priest in a temple in Kanagawa prefecture south of Tokyo on April 8 – considered to be Buddha's birthday in Japan, the Sankei Shimbun newspaper reports.

Speaking about his reinvention, the 66-year-old said: "Buddha will make me his disciple and enable me to start a new life."

Goto, who labeled the 'John Gotti of Japan', was expelled from the Yamaguchi-gumi - Japan's largest and most infamous yakuza organization - last October, after a furious row with his superiors over his conduct.

He reportedly upset his seniors amid media reports that he had offered information to the FBI in return for permission to enter the US for a life-saving liver transplant in 2001.

In his deal with the FBI, Goto reportedly gave up vital information about yakuza front companies, as well as the names of senior crime figures and the mob's links to North Korea.

German DJ breaks world record with 169 hours broadcast

A German DJ has broken the world record for the longest continuous radio show after wrapping up his "morning" programme over a week after beginning it, his station said.

DJ Dominik Schollmayer, from Hit Radio Antenne in Hannover, Germany, presenting his show for a consecutive 169 hours, beating the previous record - held by an Indian DJ - by one hour.

Under the rules the 26-year-old was allowed to play two consecutive records of up to six minutes but had to return to the airwaves immediately after the second song.

He was allowed a five-minute break ever hour but he often saved up the time so as to give himself a 15-minute break every three hours.

His attempt was also monitored by doctors as sleep deprivation caused bizarre effects, according to a blog on the station's website.

One entry on the blog, entitled: "Now he's gone completely mad" reported that the DJ was 'dancing wildly' around the studio few hours before he made the record-breaking broadcast.

Teacher kisses pig for charity

Teacher kisses pig for charity

Some schools sell candy to raise money, but at Trapnell Elementary School in Plant City, Fla., they kiss a pig - an honor that goes to the staff member who raises the most money for cancer research.

Second grade teacher Laura Carter puckered up Friday and kissed a potbellied pig to the thunderous applause of more than 500 students - her reward for raising $1,167.60 for the American Cancer Society's upcoming Relay for Life in Plant City.

Lest anyone think she faked it, she hammed it up before the smooch by donning hot pink lipstick - and left a sizeable smudge on the tea-cup potbellied pig's snout.

"It was real slimy," Carter said after kissing the 65-pound porker.

In all, the school and its 85 staff members raised $2,180 with its third annual kiss a pig fundraiser. They raised cash through collection jars and such money-makers as bake sales.

Man finds message in a bottle from 1913

Posted by hitsu On 4/06/2009 05:25:00 PM 0 comments
Message in a bottle

A message left in a bottle in 1913 has been found on the shores of the Spokane River in Washington.

Darin Winkler was out walking along the river's edge with his kids, Evan and Iris, last weekend when he saw something that looked like an antique bottle, with an old-fashioned cork stopper, the Spokesman-Review reported Sunday.

"Spring and high water brings up various kinds of things on shore," Winkler said.

"We saw an old flattened basketball and a bunch of bottles. Mostly they were whiskey bottles, Mad Dog 20-20 bottles, things like that. But this one stood out."

Winkler said he took the bottle back to his house and carefully teased the note out of it. The paper was a little damp, flaking in places, but mostly intact. The first thing he saw took his breath away: "March 30, 1913."

Some parts of the note had deteriorated, but large portions of the pencil-written note remained decipherable.

Here's what it says, with missing parts noted with ellipses:

March 30, 1913

Dear friend,

Who ever finds this bottle, please write in ... at Rockford, within the next two years ... and let me know it... Will put it in ...Spokane ... North East ... state of Wa ...

Yours truly,

Emmett Presnell

Rockford, Wash.

RFD #1 Box 5

After some sleuthing on the Internet and in the Spokesman-Review archives, Winkler was able to find out plenty about that long-ago bottle.

His theory is that the bottle got washed up on a bank or into a tangle of logs, and stayed high and dry for most of the next nine decades, thus explaining its relatively good condition.

Recently, possibly even last year, high water may have refloated the bottle and sent it down the river to where Winkler found it, directly across from the old Natatorium Park.

When Presnell died at age 85, on May 13, 1978, that bottle was probably still stuck in a riverbank somewhere.

Priest baptises baby with lemon cola

Baby Baptism

A baby was baptised by a priest with lemon-flavored cola instead of holy water after cold weather froze the church's taps in Norway.

The Norwegian cleric had to improvise after the taps were temporarily turned off because of freezing temperatures.

Priest Paal Dale, from the town of Stord, about 150 miles west of the capital Oslo, ad-libbed during a recent cold-spell by dabbing the lemon fizzy drink on the baby during the official ceremony.

"It had gone flat," Dale daily newspaper Vaart Land. "Only the lemon smell made this unusual."

The priest said the child's family were only informed about the switch after the ceremony, because the priest "had a need to inform" them about the lingering lemon scent.

"They didn't say much, but I assumed they smelled the aroma as well," Dale added.

Naked pole vaulter chases sponsor

Naked pole vaulter

A French pole vault champion has done an unabashed stunt to highlight his quest for a new sponsorship deal by posting a video of himself running naked through the streets of Paris on Youtube.

Romain Mesnil, silver medalist at the 2007 Athletics World Championships in Osaka, used to be sponsored by US sports brand Nike but his contract expired last year and was not renewed.

"It was probably for budgetary and strategic reasons. It's the crisis," Mesnil said.

"In times of crisis you have to come up with a novel approac."

In the video, Mesnil is seen running naked, with his pole, as if preparing for a vault, through some of the capital's most famous streets including tourist spots such as Montmartre and the Pont des Arts across the River Seine.

Somewhat disappointingly, a black censor bar has been added to cover his private parts - this makes it hard to verify that he was, in fact, truly naked.

Mesnil added: "I was very concentrated on what I was doing. It was funny.

"There were tourists who were looking at me taking pictures, but I was really into it, a bit like when you're about to jump with a pole, you don't ask yourself any questions, you're really concentrated."

However, the footage has certainly whipped up interest with some 400,000 views by Wednesday morning.

Pranksters brick up friend's front door

Posted by hitsu On 3/30/2009 08:19:00 PM 1 comments

A group of pranksters in England put up a brick wall in front of their friend's front door as payback for a previous practical joke – then posted footage of it on YouTube.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Leigh Black planned the prank after his friend Dave Pearce sneaked into his house while he was away and rearranged all of his furniture.

Then while Pearce was on vacation in Thailand, Black and his buddies built a brick wall across Pearce's front door.

The 'team' filmed their prank from start to finish and have now posted the footage on YouTube.

"When Leigh went away a few weeks ago Dave got in his house and swapped everything upstairs with everything downstairs and was there waiting for him when he got back," said Shannon Sellick, who helped build the wall.

"So we decided to get our revenge and when Dave went away to Thailand for a few days last week we built a brick wall over his front door as a nice surprise and were there waiting for him when he got back."

Despite being heavily jet-lagged after his flight home from Thailand, Pearce saw the funny side of the prank and managed to knock the wall down.

Dumbest criminal

A dimwit bandit in Pennsylvania who tried to rob a retired NYPD lieutenant at a narcotics police convention has been described as "probably the state's dumbest criminal."

John Comparetto, 56, was attending the meeting of 300 officers when he was allegedly held up at gunpoint in the men's toilets, NY Daily News reports.

He gave up his money and mobile phone but then he and some colleagues gave chase as the suspect tried to flee in a taxi.

Mr Comparetto stopped the taxi at gunpoint with his fellow officers, who then arrested a 19-year-old man near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

"This is probably the dumbest guy in the state of Pennsylvania," Mr Comparetto said. "He actually walked past a great, big poster that said, 'WELCOME NARCOTICS OFFICERS.'"

When a reporter asked the suspect for a comment as he was led out of the court, he said, "I'm smooth."

Couple laughing out loud

A couple who went to see a comedy that promised to make audiences 'laugh until they throw you out' were asked to leave the theatre – because they were laughing too much.

Sharon Whitelaw, 41, took boyfriend Tony Priestley, 42, to see a production of Bouncers at the Drill Hall in Lincoln on Saturday night as a birthday present.

But after watching the first half of the comedy they were told not to go back into the auditorium, as fellow theatre-goers had complained the couple were "laughing at moments that weren't funny, kicking the seats in front and being loud".

"I think the whole way we were treated was like children," Sharon told This is Lincolinshire.

"I wished the ground had swallowed me up at the time, I was so embarrassed."

The couple received a full refund for the price of the tickets and their pre-ordered drinks.

Drill Hall manager Simon Hollingworth said he appreciated that the couple might not be happy, but that his staff did the right thing.

Teenager paints giant manhood on the roof of house

The Giant Willy

It seems a £1 million house is not striking enough for 18-year-old Rory McInnes, so he decided to make the property stand out by painting a giant manhood on the roof of their house near Hungerford, Berks.

Rory got the idea after watching a documentary about Google Earth — which lets internet users view satellite pictures.

He secretly took a pot of white paint and climbed up to the roof, where he spent half an hour reproducing the bizarre but world famous artwork of the Cerne Abbas Giant in Dorset.

Only a year later, his secret was discovered when a helicopter pilot spotted it, and hovered so his passenger could take photos.

Rory's father Andy, 54, thought it was a prank when The Sun contacted him about the painting.

He said: "It’s an April Fool’s joke, right? There’s no way there’s a 60ft phallus on top of my house."

Andy then spoke to all four of his kids demanding answers.

Cerne Abbas
When he phoned Rory, who was on holiday in Brazil, the boy burst out laughing, saying: "Oh, you’ve found it then!"

The Cerne Abbas Giant is regarded as a massive fertility symbol, and couples often have sex on his appendage in the hope of conceiving.

Rory’s mum Clare, 49, said: "We don’t want any more children, so the idea of sleeping under a giant fertility symbol is rather worrying."

Andy added: "We don’t want to lie in bed at night and hear couples at it above us.

"When Rory gets home he will be given a scrubbing brush and white spirit and he can go and scrub it off."

A world record in the length of a queue to a toilet was set on Sunday when 756 people lined up to visit a latrine in the Belgian capital of Brussels.

The event was organised by the United Nations' children's agency UNICEF, to raise public awareness and eventually funds for the need for more pumps, wells, latrines hygiene education for children in third world countries.

However, none of the the people queueing for the toilet used it after their wait, because it was only a fake.

Spokesman Benoit Melebeck said: "The latrine was of the same design as we use in third world countries - a dry latrine.

"The Guinness Book of Records told us we needed to get at least 500 people in the queue to get the record.

"We have 5,000 children dying every day from the lack of clean water, sanitation and hygiene education - this means one every 20 seconds."

Mark Stephenson and Fiona Lincoln, from Strood in Kent, are hiking in just their boots and socks from London to Birmingham to raise awareness for a Clothes for a Cause appeal, Metro.co.uk reports.

Their route will take them across London, following the Thames Path past Hampton Court and Windsor Castle into Oxfordshire, then through the Cotswolds and Staffordshire until they reach Birmingham.

They plan to cover the 120 miles by this Friday, when the Outdoors Show opens at the Birmingham NEC.

The show is running the Clothes for a Cause appeal encouraging visitors to bring their old walking gear and equipment to be donated to Oxfam and re-used in foreign aid projects.

Mark Stephenson said: "We are planning to walk the entire distance wearing only hiking boots, socks and a rucksack to raise awareness for the appeal.

"As naturists we are completely comfortable in our own skin and will only cover up in adverse weather conditions, or if we are asked to do so when passing through populated sections of the hike."

The abusive toy parrot

A mother was left furious after a toy parrot she bought for her child started squawking swear words.

According to The Times, Tina Banks bought the cuddly bird from a store in her home town of Brighton for her 11-month-old daughter Roxy.

However, when she pulled the toy's cord she was outraged to hear the phrase: "Oi! What are you looking at ****hole."

Other phrases programmed into the brightly-coloured toy included "I'm going to rip your head off and **** down your neck", "Sod off, sod off", "Oi! Bugger off" and "What are you staring at ****hole?"

Mrs Banks, who lives in Brighton, said that the parrot's swearing had caused her a great deal of embarrassment.

"I bought it because Roxy was throwing a paddy in her pram and I thought the parrot might keep her a little bit quiet," she explained.

"But when we got outside and I handed it to her, it came out with these swear words. The worse thing was there was a man in front of us who thought it was aimed at him.

"I went ten shades of red and have never been so embarrassed in my life. When I bought it I didn’t realise it spoke, I just thought it was a cuddly toy.

"But it has got a cord coming out of its backside that, when you pull it, comes out with all this bad language. It's shocking to think this was being sold in a toy section."

Hussein Lalani, commercial director of the 99p stores, apologised and said the toy should not have been in the toy section.

He said: "I will be speaking to the manager to make sure he puts the toy into the correct section.

"It is quite clearly labelled that the product is not suitable for children and none of the toys we have are suitable for kids under three-years-old."

Frog marriage to summon rain

Barun and Bijuli at the wedding ceremony
Barun and Bijuli at the wedding ceremony

Two frogs got married in Hengrabari, in the northwestern Indian state of Assam, in a ritual to please rain gods.

More than 2,000 wedding guests attended the ceremony as frog bride Bijuli, which means 'Thunder', and groom Barun, 'Wind', tied the knot.

The amphibians were then fed a special celebratory lunch of flies and mosquitoes.

After the ceremony, the happy couple were sent on their honeymoon - by being released into a nearby stream, along with two stand-by couples.

The "wedding" was held in order to invoke the rain-god as a dry spell over the past couple of months has hit most parts of Assam, which has led to severe water shortages.

"It's a traditional belief that when a frog marriage is performed, the Barun Devata (the rain-god) is pleased and the rain comes," former councillor Bijoy Das told The Hindu newspaper.

A spokesman for local authorities said: "The marriage went off very well.

"We hope that now the rains will finally come. The region is absolutely parched and we need rain. We didn't know what else to do."

A nine-month-old duck has become a local celebrity in Dorset with her dog-emulating behavior.

Essy the duck wags her tail, tries to bark, and competes for treats with her canine companions – two Staffordshire cross dogs, The Daily Telegraph reported Tuesday.

The Cherry Valley duck came from the same duck farm in Cadnam as the famous four-legged Stumpy.

Owners Steph, 25, and Tony Tufft, 35, adopted the confused duck when she was only 8 weeks old.

Tony, a boat builder, said their unusual pet has been amusing people by acting like a dog since her arrival at their home in the Charminster area of the town.

He said: "We are known throughout Charminster. People come out of bars to see her. They love it.

"She doesn't know she's a duck. She must think she's a dog.

"She goes up to other dogs. People can't understand it and the dogs are really confused as well.

"We even had to buy Essy her own lead, after getting strange looks from people who thought we were duck-napping."

His wife Steph added: "It's as if Brad Pitt was walking on the lead, the amount of people that come out."

The couple said their dogs are very protective of Essy and walk on either side of her when they go out for walks.

And although Essy has a bedroom of her own in the airing cupboard of the couple's home, she prefers to sleep with the dogs.
